Golfplay is revolutionizing the indoor golf experience by blending high-quality simulators with a social, fun-filled atmosphere. With two locations in Kitchener and Waterloo, Golfplay has become a go-to destination for golfers and non-golfers alike, offering leagues, events, and family-friendly programming. Steve Harris, the visionary behind Golfplay, shares his journey, insights, and what makes Golfplay a standout in the indoor golf industry.
Question: How many simulator bays do you have?
Steve: We have 18 bays at our Waterloo location and 9 in Kitchener. Additionally, we’ve incorporated a 7-bay GOLFZON Driving Range (GDR) setup.
Q: How many locations do you operate?
Steve: We currently have two locations, one in Kitchener and another in Waterloo.
Q: How is your business set up, particularly your pricing structure?
Steve: Golfplay leans more towards entertainment rather than performance. While we offer lessons, our focus is on creating a social space where people can connect, participate in leagues, and enjoy tournaments. For example, we host events like our Sweetheart’s Scramble on Valentine’s Day, which includes prizes based on performance and draws, ensuring the focus is on the experience rather than just the lowest score. Our offerings include stone-fired pizza, a full bar, and a festive holiday drink menu. The atmosphere is lively, with music playing, and we strive to maintain a balance of fun and relaxation.
Q: How do you attract new customers?
Steve: Events play a big role in bringing in new faces. From bachelor parties to company takeovers with over 100 attendees, we cater to a variety of groups. Our community-focused approach includes hosting fundraisers for local charities, such as food banks. These events are an alternative to traditional outdoor golf charity tournaments, offering a more social and time-efficient option. For example, our indoor tournaments last around three hours and allow attendees to socialize, network, and even participate in raffles or silent auctions.
Q: Who is your target audience, and how do you appeal to them?
Steve: Our target audience includes both avid golfers and non-golfers. We aim to make golf accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Our leagues have over 500 members, many of whom have been with us since we opened seven years ago. For events, we offer flexible course options ranging from iconic venues like Pebble Beach to more playful settings like “bumper golf.” This ensures everyone, regardless of skill level, has a great time.
Q: What inspired you to open your own business?
Steve: I’ve been a golfer my entire life and previously worked as a VP at a large company. I realized I wasn’t enjoying it and decided to pursue something entrepreneurial. Running Golfplay allows me to combine my love for golf with my passion for connecting with people. It’s a lifestyle business that’s both fun and rewarding. There’s nothing quite like greeting customers who are in great spirits and seeing the joy our facility brings them.
Q: Why did you choose GOLFZON simulators over others?
Steve: GOLFZON’s recreational features, like the auto-tee system, were game-changers for us. It ensures a smooth experience without interruptions, allowing more golf to be played. The playability and responsiveness of GOLFZON’s simulators, especially the putting mechanics, create a realistic and enjoyable experience. The lack of latency and the way the ball reacts on the turf are unmatched. I’ve tried other simulators, and the disconnect caused by delayed feedback just doesn’t compare.
Q: What kind of support did you receive from GOLFZON during the setup process?
Steve: GOLFZON provided excellent support throughout the sales and installation process. Their team was attentive and helped us tailor our setup to suit our needs. This partnership has been instrumental in our success.
Q: What advice would you give your past self?
Steve: I’d remind myself to trust the process and embrace the challenges of entrepreneurship. The journey of building a business from the ground up is incredibly rewarding. Watching Golfplay grow and seeing the impact it has on our community has made it all worthwhile.
Q: How do you see Golfplay contributing to the growth of the sport?
Steve: We’re breaking down barriers for new golfers by creating a welcoming environment where there’s no pressure. Families, including kids as young as four or five, can come and enjoy playful courses like Robotron. By making golf fun and accessible, we’re introducing more people to the sport and fostering a new generation of golfers.
Q: Do you have any upcoming initiatives we can promote?
Steve: We’re excited to announce the start of our franchising efforts. While it requires a significant investment, we believe the indoor golf market will continue to grow, especially with innovations like the GOLFZON Tour and TGL. Our business model is adaptable to various markets, and we’re confident it will resonate with entrepreneurs who share our passion for golf and community building.
